Rhubarb Flowers

I’ve had this rhubarb plant for years, but it’s only been in the garden box for about 4 years. It has thrived there, getting bigger and stronger every year.

This year the oddest growth started coming up out of the centre as the leaves unfurled.

I realized it was likely a flower, but I’ve never seen rhubarb flower so I did a little research. Sure enough a rhubarb flower it is. Apparently a well-established rhubarb plant will in some years put out a flower stalk. Unfortunately I will have to cut it, as the flower will slow or stop the production of the delicious rhubarb stalks. It sure is cool looking!

Maybe I’ll put it in a jar out on the deck and see what it looks like when it fully opens.

  1. That is so cool! I have never seen that before. I would love to see what it looks like in full bloom.

  2. wow. it looks quite alien rising up from the rhubarb. i vote you put it in a jar on the deck – i want to see this baby when she’s in full bloom!

oh and guess what?!?! all our snow melted and i discovered *two* rhubarb plants in the back corner in my new yard! yay!!

  3. This falls into the “learn something new every day” category. I had no idea a rhubarb plant had a flower.

Welcome! I always like to hear what people think of a post, it often leads to a great discussion! I am now responding to comments and questions right in the comments themselves, so other people can follow the conversation.
