It’s the end of the month already?! I thought I’d update on my goal of moving more this month. I kept track of how much I was walking every week in my day planner, and I would say I walked more than half the days in every week. That means a proper walk with arms pumping, not just taking the dog out for him to go to the bathroom! Some of those walks were hikes and some were family walks, but most of them were on my own around the neighbourhood. I actually love walking around here – it’s a nice neighbourhood and I always see something new, renovations or movings or plantings, that keep my interest. I’m also fortunate in that my walks usually include both ocean and mountain views, not bad for a local walk! I take different routes on different days, to entertain both me and Chika.
I did stretch more, adding some yoga into my week (and boy were my hips popping). The thing I’m most pleased with is that I’m forcing myself to get up from my desk and move more at work. The work I do means I can easily never leave my desk other than to make my lunch in 5.5 hours, and that’s just not good for anyone. So I’m finding reasons to get up, whether it’s to check a file, or print at the back printer, or check the office mailbox up at reception.
As it gets lighter in the evenings I’m hoping to walk longer and more. Although we’ve been fortunate enough not to have a lot of rain this month, it’s still hard to get out when it’s dark and cold (although I did get out at 8:15 last night!).
I do think I’ve lost a pound or two, but more importantly I feel good. Onwards and upwards, I say!
So there you have it, some success and a good start. How about you? Have you found yourself moving more or less in this darkest of winter months? Hibernation is so tempting….
Back tomorrow to tell about my health focus for February!
Well, it feels like I haven’t moved enough for ages. We are now free of snow, but my work life at school is so busy at present, I seem to go to school and back and not much else. Once the evenings begin to get lighter then I will make more of an effort ;-) Ros

Looks like you are doing great, Kate. After a long hiatus I’m easing back into yoga. Class #2 was today and it felt good. You know I’m a big fan of walking. Enjoy your beautiful landscape!

It sounds like you had a very successful first month of implementing your health program. I have recently read a couple of things about how bad it is to stay at a desk all day long with little or no movement. What you are doing is exactly what they suggested! Thanks for the update. I had been wondering how it was going.

Hurray! Way to go Kate! It is so good that you’re posting your health check-ins, you ARE inspiring! The weather is becoming warmer & warmer, days are longer (finally!). It’s a good time to get outside!
I’m still doing my ‘weekend’ walks in the park by the lake but want to do more. I did, however, join a weekly Qigong class! (similar to Tai Chi). I’ve been to 2 classes so far. It is calm & relaxing/refreshing, I love it!

I love your update…both just that you are willing to share it to inspire us (it does!) and that you are reporting more movement! My back has been giving me lots of trouble recently (it happens every year when I go over a weight threshold…due to an old injury) so I’ve been fighting hibernation because of it. However, I’ve settled into a pretty good routine for me of walking as soon as I get up (about 20 minutes) and then coming back and practicing yoga for 25-40 minutes depending on how I feel. Sometimes these are power poses that get my heart rate up and some days I’m just loosening up muscles and joints. It’s amazing how good I feel after this morning routine…both body and mind. Later in the day, if my back is feeling okay, I do 45 minutes of cardio. Like you, I think I’ve lost a couple pounds but I don’t look…I feel better and that’s the most important thing (this good feeling is helping me stave off stress eating which is likely the reason I’ve lost a couple pounds). The weight will come off. Kudos on a good January Kate!
