The Wedding Blanket

My father-in-law is getting married this May (on our wedding anniversary, by coincidence). He has been living with the woman for a year or so, and they seem to bring a lot to each other so we are happy for them. We don’t know her very well, they don’t live in our town and we just don’t seem to see much of them, even though he is retired. Just the way it goes sometimes.

They have requested no gifts, and are having a small wedding. He is family, though, so we couldn’t really let the wedding happen without giving them a blanket. Blankets are my traditional wedding gift. This one was harder to choose a pattern and colour scheme for than the others I have done. I think because they are an older couple and we don’t know her colours at all, I found it difficult to find the right combination. In the end I went with some modern neutrals, and I think it will fit with whatever her decorating style is while not being too feminine for his tastes.

The pattern is from Bernat, the Lacy Waves Afghan (Rav link). I’m using the yarn called for, Bernat Super Saver. It’s not the softest, but I know it softens up when washed and I also know this blanket has to be machine washable and dryable as they have a cat and a dog (both of who go on the furniture).

I’m notoriously slow when it comes to working on blankets, but as I have a deadline on this one I think it will get done in time. I’m hoping it will, anyhow!
