New Year’s Day

It’s a bit of an annual tradition around here to make sure we get outside as a family on New Year’s Day. In the past we have headed to the trails for a good long walk, but this year the sunshine was so wonderful that we headed to the beach. (As an aside, a mutual friend was there when my friend unwrapped her new calendar of Beaches. “You sure go to a lot of beaches,” she said. We all should when we live here!)

We went to our favourite beach, and walked the length of it and back, stopping along the way to admire the views. Chika, of course, had a new year’s day swim.

The light on the water was so beautiful. Even by 2 pm the sun is getting low in the sky, so the play of the shadows and the pale light is stunning.

Looking directly across to the Coastal Mountains, there were a lot of fishing boats out on the water. Not sure what is active right now, but the boats were out again yesterday in the same area, so something must be biting well! The water was so still that there were some amazing reflections happening.

Chika didn’t care, he was just happy to be in the water.

Finally, a self-portrait with Mr. Kate. This was not an easy thing to do, as he is a good foot taller than me! But I stood on my tip-toes and he scrunched down, and we pulled it off.

I have heard it said that you should start the New Year the way you intend for it to go.

This will do quite nicely.

  1. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Love the amazingly beautiful photos. You live in a very beautiful place. Oh, and that looks like just the best way to head into 2011. Ros and Oscar

  2. Happy New Year! I love the pic of you & Mr. Kate! A handsome guy, for sure! Your walk to your fav. beach looks absolutely amazing, it’s like I’m (almost) there! Makes for a good walk. Is also a good time to perhaps feel a bit inspired to paint the beautiful scene? Unless of course, you’ve got a photographic memory, ha ha (something I am presently lacking).
    Cheers!
