Malcolm Island is in Johnstone Strait, a world-famous whale watching and fishing area on the north east side of Vancouver Island. To reach the island you take a ferry from the lovely town of Port McNeill, a two hour journey north of Campbell River. Sointula is the town on Malcolm Island, and it has a fascinating history.
This was our first time to the island, and we were excited to explore a new area. The three-day trip did not disappoint, and not just because we saw whales every day (but that made it really special). The town and the island are a lovely place to visit, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
Walking around the town was fun, there were so many old and colourful buildings. We would see what we thought was a falling-down barn, only to realize that people were obviously living in it – living history indeed.
There is a manned lighthouse on the island on the northern tip – Pulteney Point.
There was much evidence of the fishing industry as well, with fishing boats in the local waters every day. There were also signs of fishing in days gone by.
All in all, a great adventure.
Wow! You have made me want to go to Malcolm Island as soon as possible.
