Half the dogs in America will receive Christmas presents this year, yet few of us ever pause to consider the life of the pig – easily as intelligent as a dog – that becomes the Christmas ham.
– Michael Pollen “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”
This year we bought a whole pig from a friend who has a farm. We visited the pigs, saw what they ate, how they were raised and where they spent their time. They were allowed to be pigs. For me, who isn’t interested in being a vegetarian, this is important. I’m hoping to do the same with chickens and beef next year.
Susan Orlean had a great piece about raising chickens in the New Yorker recently. It’s probably on their website.

i agree completely kate. big surprise, huh? :)
as a meat-eater i try only consuming meat when i know it has come from a place where the animals are allowed to live as animals are supposed to live.
i’m lucky that we have a few local farms around that do just that.
