Back to School

First day of the 2009-2010 school year.

First day of the 2009-2010 school year.

This week is the return to school for most of the province’s students. Our city is no exception, with the schools opening the day after Labour Day. Things are a little uncertain the first week, the elementary students never know their teacher placement until the end of the first week. Our numbers are already shaky, and add to that the recent budget cuts from the provincial government and you get a recipe for a lot of uncertainty.

However, some things are the same every year. The nervous anticipation, the excitement of seeing friends again, the treasuring of the new school supplies — all this swirls around the hallways this first week.

Parents also feel the stress of first week. There is the worry of what teachers your children will have, whether they will be in a class with their friends or the school bully, how they will do academically. Sleep for everyone is a little disrupted the first week.

Our school has planned a beach day today, a way for the kids to burn off some of this nervous energy and enjoy being with all their friends again.

As for the parents, we adjust quickly.

(I have another article out in Island Parent, this one about parents talking to teachers. If you want to read it you can find it here.)

  1. They don’t know who they will have until the end of the week? That seems crazy. What do they do all week???

Welcome! I always like to hear what people think of a post, it often leads to a great discussion! I am now responding to comments and questions right in the comments themselves, so other people can follow the conversation.
