“No matter that you have a PhD and have read all of Henry James twice. If you still persist in writing, “Good food at it’s best,” you deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave.”
“Eats, Shoots & Leaves” by Lynne Truss
Cracks me up every time. And I’m editing today…
I bought these Christmas cards that say, inside:
“It came without ribbons!”
“It came without tags!”
“It came without packages,
boxes or bags!”
When I bought them I thought “this surfeit of quotation marks won’t bother me” but I was wrong. Now I’ve written “I know there are too many quotation marks but the sentiment is sound” fifteen times and I just wish I had opted for the ones that said “Merry Christmas to all.”
