…. a young 16 year old boy asked out a young 16 year old girl. They were friends and she wasn’t sure at first, so she thought about it for a day. Then she said OK. They were typical high school sweethearts, sickeningly infatuated with each other. They were well-known as a couple around the school, especially as they seemed such an unlikely couple. She was an academic ‘geek’, and he was a skipping-out trouble maker. But they were in that most wonderful of things; teen-age love.
They continued to date during high school. He went into the cooking program and stopped skipping out so much. Then in Grade 12 they had to think about life after school. She was going far away to university. He wasn’t. Most everyone thought the relationship was doomed, and that would be the end of that. The young girl and the young boy almost thought that, and for three days they stayed apart.
After three days they realized that wasn’t any good, so they decided to go away together while the girl went to university. Going away together was very much against everyone else’s wishes. They left a month after high school graduation.
Ten years later at the high school reunion, a number of people asked the girl, now not so young and who organized the reunion, if she ever heard from that boy she dated back in high school. That had been a pretty intense relationship, people said, what ever happened to him?
I married him, she said, pointing over her shoulder, and had his son.
….
That day was 19 years ago, tomorrow will be 19 years from our first date. Sometimes, it really is true love.

I think that first love is so intense that nothing ever quite captures that again. Do you still feel that level of emotions about him as you did then?

Happy Anniversary, Kate! What a beautiful and romantic story, and you are still living it! I never had a high school love like this although I remember wanting this kind of romance as a teenager. Alas, I didn’t meet my first real love until I was in my late 20s, and the love of my life at 40! Either way, true love is precious, isn’t it? K xo
