Elizabet stood still and thought seriously before she said, “If the world was as smooth as a ball, there wouldn’t be a single mountain on the whole earth. But even then a rocky slope would be just as exciting as the highest mountain in Norway, so long as it was the only rocky slope.”
-The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder
I wonder if our society’s obsession with bigger and better is because we know that what is in our backyard isn’t the biggest or the highest or the whateverest? We have such access to images and experiences now, that we can’t be content with our own wonders anymore.
thank you for the reminder to be thankful for being blessed with what we already have. it’s easy to get carried away with consumerism during the holidays.

I have to admit that while I take many things for granted, I do not take for granted the beauty around me. Whether it be the smallest flower, the tallest mountain, or a flat field of grass I continue to be amazed by all that nature has to offer. I have a feeling that this describes you as well. But I agree with you…there are many who fail to see what is so special around them…because it’s not the ‘biggest and best’.
